We manufacture three types of wood cutting boards at Burgoon Furniture Company for our Burgoon Boards line.

Butcher Blocks - end grain

Cutting Boards – edge grain

Bread Boards – flat grain

Butcher Blocks are the most robust and durable professional grade cutting boards we manufacture and are terrific additions to any home or restaurant kitchen. Our Butcher Blocks are as functional as they are beautiful. We offer them in a variety of sizes and because they are end grain, the knife blade slips between the wood fibers without crushing them. This not only keeps knives sharper longer, but also minimizes wear to the butcher block. These Butcher Blocks have become Burgoon Boards’ signature pieces. With artistic design and use of the tree’s growth rings, we produce visually pleasing effects in our Diamond, Checkered and Patchwork board patterns. They also have brought our most common complaint: “My Burgoon Butcher Block is a work of art. It is too beautiful to use.” While we are both humbled and pleased by these comments, we encourage anyone with a Burgoon Board not to be afraid to use it. Available in five different sizes and five different wood combinations, add one of these butchers blocks to your kitchen counter and listen to your friends’ compliments.

The Cutting Board, or edge grain board, is our best selling board. It combines durability and lower cost to be a customer favorite. Edge grain implies the growth rings of the tree are oriented "verticle", from ninety degrees to forty-five degrees to the face of a flat sawn board. In other words, flat sawn boards are glued face to face and the edges become the cutting surface. This gives the cutting board stability and strength. The cost of the cutting board is lower than a butcher block because a butcher block is built by sawing a cutting board into pieces and re-gluing those pieces with the end grain becoming the cutting surface. Our edge grain cutting boards are available in six sizes and three wood choices.

Bread Boards, or flat grain broads, are the third type of cutting board we manufacture. Made for cutting and serving bread, cheese or even fruit, the Bread Board is designed to showcase the beauty of the flame or cathedral effect the semi circle growth rings impart in the cutting surface. Glued in strips--cup up, cup down--to help maintain flatness, this ¾” thick bread board makes for a light and functional pleasure. With three sizes and three wood types to choose from, you can slice anything from a club sandwich to a thin French baguette to a wide loaf of Italian garlic bread.

At Burgoon Furniture Company we pride ourselves in using the same care and craftsmanship in making our high end furniture as we do our wood cutting boards. The wood blanks used in our Burgoon Boards prior to glue up are all dimensionally the same. We do not use scrap wood to make our high quality cutting boards. We use FDA approved Titebond lll wood glue which makes the joint stronger than the wood itself. With proper care and maintenance as provided on our web site under cutting board care, these boards can last for generations.

WOOD TYPES

We use American Black Cherry, American Walnut and Hard Maple in manufacturing of our cutting boards and butcher blocks .

The Black Cherry cutting boards and butcher blocks range in color from a rich red to the reddish brown of the heartwood with an occasional splash of creamy white sap wood. This closed grain wood will darken with age and exposure to light. It is usually straight in figure but curly does occur and may contain brown to black pith flecks and small gum pockets. Its hardness is 950 on the Janka scale, lower than Hard Maple but still a great choice for cutting boards and quality furniture.

The Hard Maple cutting boards and butcher blocks are made from the sapwood which is creamy white with a slight reddish-brown tinge. It is generally straight grained but can occur as curly, fiddle back, bear-scratch or bird’s eye in figure. The sapwood may also contain pith flecks and mineral streaks. Hard maple is the domestic hardwood standard for cutting boards and butcher blocks .Its hardness “1450 Janka” makes this wood tough and durable .

The Walnut cutting boards and butcher blocks range in color from a dark chocolate brown to purplish black of the heartwood to a tan sapwood. This open grain wood is 1010 on the Janka hardness scale and is a very popular choice because of its color .

All the cutting boards we manufacture come pre-treated with mineral oil and your choice of a rubberized board mat or white rubber feet at no additional charge.
